At Brightview Senior Living, Joel Wilson is tasked with supporting building projects across eight states, projects that seek to give those in their golden years the dignity, joy, and freedom to enjoy retirement to the fullest extent.
Brightview, which appeared on Fortune’s 2023 100 Best Companies to Work For list, has been in significant growth mode the past five years. In 2022, Brightview raised $202 million in a round of funding that will be utilized to develop nearly 10 new senior living communities.
Wilson, corporate director of capital projects and engineering, identifies renovation, refurbishment, and purchasing opportunities across Brightview’s portfolio that help ensure Brightview’s long-term financial future. After owners and developers have built their properties, Wilson’s team comes aboard 90 days out from opening. Once a build goes online, it becomes Wilson’s and his team’s responsibility.
At present, Wilson and his people are overseeing 438 individual capital projects across dozens of properties in Brightview’s pipeline. Projects popping up across the East Coast include a 170-unit, 4-story project in Mount Pleasant, New York; and a 197-unit community in Herndon, Virginia, that includes a library, fitness studios, pub, movie theater, salon, and art studio.
The director came to Brightview in 2017 with a deep résumé of commercial construction. Wilson says relationship cultivation and maintenance were critical, and that’s carried over to his role at Brightview. Wilson takes a hands-on approach to the management of his projects because he places a high value on the relationships he’s developed over the years with trusted builders, contractors, and subcontractors.
When it comes to his team, Wilson believes it’s the diversity of experience and background that makes it stronger. The age range across his team is broad and given that most of his people are at the beginning or middle of their careers, Wilson works with them personally to cultivate their strengths, minimize their weaknesses, and work collaboratively to achieve their broader business goals.
But it’s not just about the business. Wilson has helped build out succession planning across his organization because he doesn’t want any of his people to feel the threat of a glass ceiling.
The care and consideration he holds for his people seems to be part of something bigger at Brightview, not just for its employees but also for its residents.
A viral story highlighted the US Navy Naval Academy’s “Senior Prom” event it threw for Brightview’s Baltimore-area community. Residents walked a red carpet and danced the night away with midshipmen dressed in their military best. Other Baltimore Brightview residents have taken to TikTok to build their own online following, documenting the happenings within their communities and reaching out to users both young and old.
Those stories are just small examples of the continuing focus Brightview places on every aspect of its resident experience, from the construction of a new build to the day-to-day fellowship it seeks out on behalf of its most deserving seniors.
As Wilson and his team continue to help Brightview’s expansion, there’s one thing that’s certain: Brightview’s purview is the long-term. From the opening of a new location, Wilson and his team are there to ensure the halls people walk, the rooms they occupy, and the amenities they enjoy are extraordinary, just like the lives Brightview’s residents have lived.
