Founded in 1955, the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) has maintained two campuses in Long Island’s Old Westbury and the Upper West Side of Manhattan as a hub for cybersecurity, bioscience, bioengineering, nanoengineering, and countless other cutting-edge technologies. Graduates of NYIT include scholars, inventors, international royalty, Olympians, billionaires, and founders of Fortune 500 organizations.
Ongoing building and renovation at NYIT are especially prescient because the institute itself is training future construction engineers, project managers, and architects and designers.
Renovation and new builds at both campuses are in full swing as the NYIT works to ensure that its next 70 years are as remarkable as its first. Restoration of the institute’s famed Gold Coast mansion has also played a valuable learning experience for future architects enrolled at NYIT.
The Gold Coast mansion, completed in 1918 and designed by architect Thomas Hastings, underwent the first of four phases of restoration in June 2024. Professors at NYIT teamed up to get their classes exposure to the renovation and building process. Students met both online and in person with designers and project managers on the renovation team.
Restoration work includes work on the façade, brick supports and structural steel repairs, and removal and replacement of masonry and marble. The marble and masonry also required extensive cleaning.
“This visit was able to teach us beyond what we learn in the classroom, and it was cool to see architecture work being done in real time. It’s nice to be shown the versatility of being an architecture major,” one architectural technology student said of their visit to the site. “I hope we have more of these types of field trips and on-site visits in the future.”
In 2021, NYIT’s Long Island campus received a new lounge adjacent to its Orso Café. The lounge features earth tones, soft lighting, and comfortable furniture designed to relax students and provide them with an enriching location to study and congregate.
Salten Hall, once the home of two large lecture halls and a cafeteria, was recently repurposed to offer students more study and social spaces. The new Salten Commons now boasts large open gathering spaces, individual study pods, group seating, and large windows to allow natural lighting.
The renovations continued in Anna Rubin Hall, which received new classrooms, lounges, and reservable study rooms. Technology, HVAC, flooring, and lighting upgrades were included in the renovation.
The new Institute for Clinical Competence (ICC) provides students virtual patient examination rooms and simulation labs where students practice interprofessional healthcare with others. The ICC features 14 fully equipped exam rooms and the latest health technology: diagnostic equipment, osteopathic manipulation tables, and robotic “patients” for students to tend to.
The School of Health Professions is now located in the Wisser building on the Long Island campus. The move more than doubled the physical space available to the school, with large spaces being converted into individual classrooms and labs. The larger building now includes a patient simulation lab that has more than twice the capacity it did before with improved audiovisual tech throughout the lab.
Moving over to Manhattan, the Nada Marie Anid Gallery and Student Lounge is home to the Woodlands Art Collection. The new space also in 2021 with an inaugural exhibit featuring the sculptures of Emilie Brzezinski.
The Manhattan Enrollment Services Center was enhanced with a new open floor plan, meet-and-greet space, and modular seating for students and visitors. The open floor plan can also be utilized for informal lectures and/or meeting space.
The ongoing work across multiple campuses is overseen by Nick Haralambidis, director of design and construction at NYIT. Haralambidis has spent over 20 years in higher education, healthcare, and business with budgets up to $180 million. He’s been at NYIT since 2011.
Haralambidis himself is a graduate of NYIT, earning his BS in architecture there in 1996. In a role that has brought his career full circle, it’s very possible that the director’s work today is helping provide the education for a future director of design and construction at the prestigious institute.
